radKIDS Camp: Empowering Youth Through Safety and Self Empowerment

About radKIDS

Dates for the upcoming radKIDS Camp will soon be announced!

radKIDS is a nationally recognized children’s safety education program that equips youth and their families with skill-based knowledge to promote safety, resilience, and confidence.

Established in 2001, the Personal Empowerment Safety Education Program emphasizes practical tools that enable children to recognize, avoid, and—if necessary—escape harmful situations. By replacing fear with actionable skills, radKIDS builds children’s self-worth, fosters critical thinking, and reinforces the importance of personal boundaries.

Why radKIDS is Vital

radKIDS addresses 6 of the 7 evidence-based protective factors for adolescent substance misuse as defined by SAMHSA’s SPF for Prevention Success Training Curriculum. This
includes:

  • Building social competencies.
  • Fostering constructive use of time.
  • Enhancing commitment to learning.

By promoting resilience, radKIDS helps mitigate the long-term impacts of trauma, reducing the likelihood of substance misuse as a coping mechanism. The program’s success lies in its ability
to replace fear with knowledge and self-protective behaviors, creating safer environments for children and their families.

Meeting a Critical Need

The 2022 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey (FYSAS) and local data highlight the urgency
of early intervention:

  • 64.2% of Nassau County youth reported being taunted or teased.
  • 36.6% experienced physical bullying.
  • 34.2% faced cyberbullying.
  • 13% skipped school due to bullying.

Research shows that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including bullying, abuse, and trauma, significantly increase the risk of mental health challenges and substance misuse later in life. Additionally, 55.8% of women in methadone treatment report childhood sexual abuse
(Austin & Shanahan, 2018), illustrating the link between early trauma and substance dependence.

radKIDS in Action

The program provides a hands-on, trauma-informed curriculum that teaches children to:

  • Recognize and resist abduction, bullying, and abuse.
  • Build confidence and resilience through boundary-setting.
  • Foster open communication with trusted adults to improve mental health outcomes.

By promoting resilience, radKIDS helps mitigate the long-term impacts of trauma, reducing the likelihood of substance misuse as a coping mechanism. The program’s success lies in its ability
to replace fear with knowledge and self-protective behaviors, creating safer environments for children and their families.

Community Collaboration

radKIDS integrates seamlessly into community initiatives, ensuring a collaborative approach to youth safety and education. Supported by the National Sheriffs’ Association and implemented
by certified instructors—including parents, educators, and law enforcement—the program fosters partnerships that strengthen safety nets for children.

The radKIDS program is a transformative initiative that not only addresses immediate safety needs but also reduces long-term risks, including substance misuse. By empowering children
with the skills to navigate challenges, set boundaries, and build resilience, radKIDS paves the way for healthier trajectories into adolescence and adulthood.
